Description
( 10 seeds ) Roselle Hibiscus ( Sabdariffa ) is a tropical plant known for it’s edible, tart red calyces, which are used to make teas, jams, and juices, similar to cranberries.
The plant’s leaves are also consumed as a vegetable, and its stems yield a strong fiber for making twine and sacks.
Roselle thrives in warm climates, requiring a long growing season and full sun, and is often grown as an annual in cooler zones.
FOOD: The fleshy red calyces ( the part that surrounds the fruit ) are used to make beverages, jams, jellies, and sauces. The leaves can be eaten raw in salads or cooked as a vegetable
FIBER: The stems produce a strong, lustrous fiber called hemp, used for making sacks, twine, and other fabrics
BEVERAGES: The calyces are famously used to make a tart, flavorful drink, often called “sorrel” or “karkadeh”
CLIMATE: Roselle is a heat loving plant that requires a long, warm growing season. It is intolerant of frost and is typically grown as an annual in cooler climates
SUNLIGHT: it needs full sun to grow
SOIL: Plant in well-draining soil to prevent root rot
PLANTING: start seeds indoors about eight weeks before the last spring frost. Transplant seedlings after the danger of frost has passed
CALYCES: Harvest the red calyces when they are plump and fleshy, which occurs as the flowers fade and the fruit develops
